Greetings Roderick Families:

It was another busy week here at the Roderick School.  Please take a few minutes to read about the happenings at the school.

Last April the students at Roderick School entered poems in a contest sponsored by the National Schools Project. There were 311 Roderick students whose poems were chosen for publication by The Young American Poetry Digest. This contest is designed to share our youth's talents with others and to provide a national publishing opportunity for young poets. The poems were selected by a panel of educators who evaluated the overall quality of the poem based on student's age and grade level.

As one of the schools with the highest number of poems published, Roderick School was recently presented with a $100.00 check.

Congratulations to this week's Positive Referral's!  These students were recognized for being helpful, supportive, and considerate.  Thank you for making our school a better place!  We are proud of you!

Scholastic Book Fair News

The Book Fair begins next Tuesday, October 29th and runs through Thursday, October 31st. 

Get first pick of books with our kickoff Tuesday morning starting at 7:30 a.m. 

Can’t come that early? Tuesday night from 6:00 – 8:00 is our Halloween Costume Contest.  Prizes will be handed out every 20 minutes for the best costume!  Goody bags will be handed out to the first 50 students along with tricks and treats!  You can also begin your book shopping online now through November 12^th at the Online Book Fair. Check the school website for the Online Book Fair address. 

Fans of the Wimpy Kid series—reserve your copy of Wimpy Kid 8 by October 30th. Pre-order forms went out via email on 10/17, and will also be available at the Book Fair and online.

Halloween is fast approaching.  Hopefully, the weather will cooperate next Thursday and the kids will have an awesome night.  I recently located a website that included some very important tips on Halloween safety.  I wanted to share it with all of you.  Happy Halloween!

Please be reminded that there are no vehicles permitted in the bus circle during arrival and dismissal times.  These times include 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM and 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Hello Roderick Community,

On Tuesday, Roderick teachers used the Professional Development day to dig deeper into the new Common Core State Standards.  Teachers spent time during the day working with Math Coach, Dr. John Ribiero and ELA Coach, Dr. Judy Neville.  In addition, teachers worked with their grade levels to develop grade level SMART Goals.  

On Wednesday, the Student Council met to accomplish a variety of tasks pertaining to some upcoming school events.  During the time on Wednesday, students made posters for today's Breast Cancer awareness day, created boxes to collect food for November's Spirit Day, developed a computer Voki, and composed a reminder note for Term I's Spirit Day. The group is full of great ideas and energy!

   

Our school celebrated Grandparents'/Special Person's Day on Thursday.  Many thanks to the guests and visitors we had at the Roderick School.  Special thanks to Alisa West and the members of the PTO for their support on this day.  Enjoy some of the scenes from this day. 

In honor of Breast Cancer awareness month, our students and staff were encouraged to wear pink.  Thank you to the Roderick Student Council for spearheading this important event.

The Roderick School Council is looking for a second parent representative to sit on our School Council.  This member needs to be a Roderick School parent with a child(ren) in the school.  Our School Council meets on the second Tuesday of the month from 3:00 - 4:00 PM.  If you are interested, please contact the Roderick office at 508.384.5435.  Thank You!

Congratulations to this week's Positive Referral.  This student was recognized for being an outstanding school citizen and helping a student in need.  We are very proud of him!!!!

This afternoon members for the King Philip High School Student Council visited our school to answer questions about next Wednesday's Halloween Spooktacular This special event is for all students in Pre-K through 6.  This event will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the high school and is free of charge.  Students will be able to play games, do crafts, and enter a costume contest.

 
Roderick School pictures will take place on Friday, October 25th.  Order forms were sent home with your child today.  Please check his/her backpack for the order form.

Dear Roderick Community,

Our sixth grade students have recently returned home from their excellent outdoor environmental education program at Camp Bournedale in Plymouth, MA.  Students in grade six left on Monday morning to experience enriching and rewarding educational and social experiences for the week.  Although this is truly a trip that you need to experience first hand to fully appreciate, I have included some pictures that highlight many of the things our students are involved with throughout their week away.  A very special thanks to the numerous chaperones who stayed in the cabins and our wonderful Grade 6 staff who take time away from their own families to ensure the students have the times of their lives!

Members of our Special Education Department (Emily Bickerstaffe, Melissa Mager, Judy Stanford, and Karen McNamara) presented to the School Committee on Tuesday evening.  The topic of their presentation was "Computer Intervention Programs" used here at the Roderick School.  We are indeed fortunate to have the funding for such important programs and to have such extraordinary teachers working with our students.

Congratulations to this week's Positive Referral.  This student went out of her way to assist a new student to our school.  We are very proud of her!

Grade 5 students, Aidan and Michael, from Ms. O'Connell's room created an independent Mayan project. As part of the project, the two students created a PowerPoint presentation, a jeopardy game, and centers to help review for an upcoming test. The centers included glyph writing, Mayan Bingo and Mayan Headbandz (based on the game headbandz).  Kids were engaged and proud of their classmates for being so creative.

This week grade 4 students sculpted with clay in the art room.  They pushed, pinched, and probed the clay to create creatures. Grade 5 students worked with paper mache in the art room this week.  They used paste and paper to create sculptures of animals or cultural masks.

Awarding Grants to Enrich the

 Wrentham Education Experience

Come be a part of the WEST team!  WEST has awarded 69 grants totaling over $110,935 to teachers of the Wrentham Public Schools.  We are currently seeking volunteers to help.  Some needs include treasurer, auction collection, fundraising, purchasing, website, writers and more.  WEST will be hosting an informal open house on Thursday, October 17^th at 7:30pm at 140 Riverside Drive.  Please feel free to stop by to find out more about WEST and how you can help.  If you have any questions, please contact Deirdre Foley at deirdre.foley@hotmail.com.  Hope to see you there!
