March 15, 2013

Dear Roderick Community,

It was great to have some warmer temperatures this week to help melt away most of the snow that came our way last week.  We had a really busy week here at the Roderick School.  Classroom activities, the band concert, and Principals' Coffee made the week go by in the blink of an eye.  Please take a minute to see the great things that went on this week and view some important upcoming dates.

Students in Grades 4 - 6 continued to prepare for the English Language Arts MCAS tests that they will take over the next two weeks.  Please refer to our school calendar for each grade level's specific dates.  I know that the students and staff have been working extremely hard throughout the year, and I am confident the students will do well.  I wish all of them the best of luck!

Congratulations to the members of our Beginning Band and music instructor, Tracy Salazar for their fantastic performance on Wednesday evening.  Although many of the students have been involved in band for less than six months, this group sounded great!

Thank you to Mr. Marshall's students for sharing their "Surviving on the Moon" activity with me!  Students in Mr. Marshall's class teamed up to determine and rank the most beneficial survival items should they land on the moon.

We hosted our third Principals' Coffee of the year on Thursday.  Our topic for this meeting was the student placement process for the upcoming school year.  We shared information about the parental input letter and fielded some great questions.  Thank you to all who attended this coffee.  If you were not able to attend, the PowerPoint we used at the meeting can be found here.

On Monday, Miss Frizzell's class and Mrs. Cloutier's class participated in a battleship tournament.  This cooperative group activity allowed students to review coordinate grids and ordered pairs, while strategizing against other fleets to remain alive!

Students in Grade 4 integrated St. Patrick's Day into their classroom lessons on Thursday.  As you can see, the students looked the part as well as played the part.

Sign ups began on Wednesday for this year's March Madness Foul Shooting Contest.  This contest is open to all fifth and sixth grade students.  This year's tournament begins on Monday, March 25th.  Please contact Mr. Adam Moon with any questions.

In anticipation of the 2013-2014 school year, you are cordially invited to attend an orientation for parents of incoming 7th graders at the King Philip Middle School.  The middle school will be holding an orientation for first time middle school parents on Thursday, March 28th, at 7:00 PM in the middle school auditorium.  School administration, school nurses, and counselors will be in attendance to assist in preparation of your child/children moving on to middle school.  Please contact Middle School Principal, Dr. Susan Gilson with any questions.

The King Philip High School Leo Club is holding their annual Spring Fair tomorrow in the high school cafeteria from 10 AM - 2 PM.  There will be lots of spring-related games and crafts for the children.

Good luck to the 5th Grade King Philip Girls Basketball Team as they compete in the state tournament this weekend.  Many of these great players attend the Roderick School.  Go KP!

Have a great St. Patrick's Day weekend and thank you for reading!

Warm regards,
Stephen S. Grenham, Principal
