June 20, 2013

Dear Roderick Community,

The buses have left for the final day of the 2012-2013 school year.  This was a great year!  Thank you to all of the Roderick families.  Your support and dedication to the Wrentham Public Schools is greatly appreciated!

Our Grade 6 students participated in their sixth grade promotion on Wednesday.  It was a beautiful afternoon and the program was fantastic!  Special thanks to all of our readers - you were awesome!  I am very proud of the Class of 2013 and wish them the very best of luck!

The students of Miss White’s class and Mrs. Moon’s class held a Southeast Asia & Oceania Showcase on Monday and Tuesday this week to present their Glogsters to their parents and teachers.  The students were required to use at least 6 technology tools (Glogster, Voki, Tagxedo, Windows Movie Maker, FlipShare, Photo Story, Timeliner and Garfield Comic) to present their research about one of 10 countries located in Southeast Asia or Oceania.  All of the groups did an incredible job!

The online ordering for the school supply programs starts tomorrow. Parents will have the option to customize their orders, with teacher specific lists. All items will be delivered to your home for free and you can order up to 3 weeks before the start of school. Please visit www.schooltoolbox.com to place your order.

Miss Phipps’s hosted her  5th Annual Writer’s Breakfast. For this event, students selected their favorite piece of writing from the year to read aloud in front of friends and family. Works included poems, memoirs, and short stories.  Many smiles were on display as students demonstrated their growth as writers.

Grade 4 spent an afternoon going on a "Tour of the USA."  Enjoy these great pictures.

Spirit Day Update

At the WPS Spirit Day held on June 7th, the students and staff contributed 1753 pounds of much needed food, which will assist the Wrentham Food Pantry through the lean summer months.

The entirely volunteer run WFP has operated out of The Whiston House since 1987, and have been the recipients of donations from community organizations, like The WPS, from the beginning. The WFP could not do what they do if not for all of your contributions! Thank you so much for supporting them through our Spirit Day initiatives.

This will be the final installment of the Roderick School blog for the 2012-2013 school year.  Please feel free to sign up for automatic updates or check back in periodically throughout the summer to find out what's happening.

We had a very successful move up day today and are all looking forward to returning in September for the 2013-2014 school year.  It has truly been an honor and a privilege to work with your children each day!  On behalf of the Roderick staff, we would like to wish you a safe and wonderful summer vacation!

Yours truly,
Stephen S. Grenham, Principal

Jun 14, 2013

Greeting Roderick Families,

Although the number of school days are dwindling, there was certainly a lot going on here at the Roderick School this past week.  Please take a few minutes to check out the wonderful things that took place this week.

Grade 6 will celebrate their graduation on Wednesday, June 19th at 12:30 PM in the Delaney courtyard.  If the weather does not cooperate, we will have the ceremony in the Gibbons gymnasium.

The weather finally cooperated on Monday morning so the students could enjoy this year's Field Day.  The weather was great and the children had a lot of fun.  Special thanks to Mr. Moon and Mr. Maguire for organizing such a wonderful day.  Additionally, thanks to all of the teachers and paraprofessionals for overseeing all of the events.

Mrs. Hall’s class performed a Fabulous Fluency Fable Show.  All year they have been working to become fluent readers.  During the year the class learned about good phrasing, rate, intonation, and accuracy.  They also learned that that fluency is the bridge to comprehension.  The plays presented were all based on Aesop’s Fables.

The sixth grade students did an amazing job presenting their science projects at the Grade 6 Science Fair on Thursday.  The students really outdid themselves with their creativity. Grade job sixth graders!

Grade 6 had their Spelling Bee this week. Congratulations to our three finalists.  Second runner-up, Ryan, 2013 school champion, Patrick, and first runner-up, Kyle!  Way to go!

This week the Roderick School had a "Principal for the Day."  Abigail from Mrs. Kane's room won this S.W.I.S.H. raffle last week.  Abigail assisted me in conducting the daily business of the school.  She made an EXCELLENT Principal!

Congratulations to this week's Positive Referrals!  These students were recognized for showing great character.  We are very proud of each of you!  Thanks for making the Roderick School a great place!

Earlier this week, our school held its second annual Summer Reading Olympics - Read to the Finish Line opening ceremony.  We celebrated the accomplishments from last year and shared our excitement for this year.  All Summer Reading Olympics - Read to the Finish Line materials will be sent home in your child's report card on the last day of school.  Additionally, all Summer Reading Olympics - Read to the Finish Line materials will be posted on our website on July 1st.

The fifth graders had a wonderful time on their field trip to the Duck Tours this week. Thanks to all of the parents who took time to chaperone.

On Thursday, we celebrated our last Positive Referral breakfast of the year.  Thank you to all of the families who attended and special thanks to our cafeteria staff for providing the delicious refreshments.  Congratulations to all of the Positive Referrals who attended the breakfast and congratulations to all who earned a Positive Referral this year!

After weeks of hard work and creativity, students in Miss Marazzi’s classroom created their own cereal boxes that incorporated several concepts they have learned in Math and ELA this year. The students used geometry, measurement, fractions, addition, multiplication, and persuasive writing skills to create their box. Some even produced their own commercial to persuade their customers to buy their cereal. They did a fantastic job!

Move-up day will be held on Thursday, June 20th.  Children will spend 15 minutes in their new teacher's classroom, get a chance to meet their new classmates, and hear a little about what's to come in September.

Thursday, June 20th is the last day of school.  Students will be dismissed at 12:00 p.m. On behalf of the entire Roderick School staff, I would like to wish you and your family a safe and happy summer vacation!

Thank you for reading this week's blog.  Have an awesome weekend!

Respectfully,
Stephen S. Grenham, Principal
