February 27, 2015 - Week 24

Greetings Roderick Families and welcome back!

The Roderick Staff and students returned from February vacation refreshed, ready to learn and excited for a full week of school.  We hope that you all had a wonderful break!

On Tuesday night, a lot of our fourth, fifth, and sixth graders came back to school at night to support Mr. Moon, WEST, and Dancing with the Stars.  It was a fantastic night!  Thanks for your support!

Mrs. Clutterbuck and Ms. Downing’s class took part in their edible simple machines exposition this week. They were faced with the challenge to build a simple machine with ONLY edible materials. The students did rise to the challenge, some groups even making movable parts in their simple machine!

As a reminder, the WEST comedy night will take place tomorrow, February 28th from 7-11 at Raffael's restaurant in Walpole.  Please contact WEST for further information.

“Balloons for Mr. Moon” event will take place during the week of March 23.  Thanks!

Miss Maloney's Grade 6 class joined together with Mrs. Albertini's Grade 1 class to participate in some cool activities to celebrate our 100th day of school on Wednesday.     Take a look.

Family Literacy Night will be held on Monday, March 2nd from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the Roderick School.  School librarian, Ms. Arnold and teachers from the Delaney and Roderick Schools have put together a wonderful evening for all students.  Creative and exciting new programs have been added this year as well as some of the most popular activities from previous years. Our PTO will again be organizing a book swap in the cafeteria.  We hope to see you all there!

PTO NEWS

  • Parents may still drop off any books they wound like to swap or donate either in the purple bin the lobbies or bring them Monday night!!
  • Reading Across Wrentham has been extended to March 22nd!  Reminder of the goal: Students in Grades 4-6 - 850 minutes

It’s DI Tournament Time!!  Come cheer on the Wildcats!  Saturday, March 14th at Whitman-Hanson High School.  Each year Destination Imagination challenges students with different types of problems to solve.  This year’s Technical Challenge has our teams building a creature and sending it on an adventure.  The Fine Arts Challenge asks students, “What are you afraid of?”  They need to create a story about a character who faces a phobia, while displaying a piece of artwork and by using an illusion.  Two of our teams are going to “The Improv Games”, using improvisational games and street performances in random settings and with different situations.  For more information about DI over all, questions about this year’s challenges, or directions to our tournament, etc., please contact Linda DeVore at diwrentham@gmail.com.

As a reminder, please refrain from entering the bus circle from 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM and 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM.  In the last month or so, there have been numerous vehicles trying to enter the bus circle during the times mentioned above.  This creates a serious safety issue for students, staff, and parents.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Our school received a Target "Take Charge of Education Program" check for $748.50 this week.  Thank you to all who support the program!

The School Council will meet on Tuesday, March 3rd at 3:15 in the Roderick Office.

Thank you for reading!  Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,
Stephen S. Grenham, Principal

February 13, 2015 - Week 23

Greetings Roderick Families and Happy Valentine's Day!

Congratulations to the members of our Beginning Band and music instructor, Tracy Salazar for their fantastic performance on Wednesday evening.  Although many of the students have been involved in band for less than six months, this group sounded great!

Thank you to all of the students and their families for creating Valentine's Day cards.  Today, members of the Student Council visited the Maples Nursing Home to deliver the cards to the residents.  The residents were very grateful!

Mrs. Fownes’s class put their math and science skills to great use this morning as they used their fraction sense to determine the amount of each ingredient they would need to follow a recipe for playdough one-fourth of its original size.  After calibrating, measuring and combining the ingredients, coloring the land with food coloring, their cinder-cone or composite cone volcanoes were born.  They then used chemistry to create a reaction to demonstrate the eruption of their volcanoes.

The Grade 4 students acted as "Tour Guides" this afternoon.  The boys and girls did a phenomenal job presenting their projects.  Bravo!

Bravo to our recent Positive Referral recipients.  These students were recognized by a variety of staff members throughout the building for embodying our school's Core Values!  We are proud of you all!

On Thursday, Miss Downing's fifth grade class 'played the part' as they continued their Explorers Unit.

Here is a look at some of the snow around the school......
