Happy May Everyone!

On Monday, our sixth graders visited the KP Middle School.  During their hour and a half stay, students received a message from the principal, went on a student-led tour, heard from the school's guidance staff, and learned about the opportunities that students have in middle school.  In early June, the principal of the Middle School and three former Roderick School students will visit our school to answer any questions students may have regarding their transition to the Middle School.

Congratulations to last week's Positive Referrals.  We are very proud of each of you!

School Council

The Roderick School Council held their final meeting of the school year on Wednesday, May 1st.  I would like to thank Mrs. Eileen DeWitt and Mrs. Bobbi Cohen (parent representatives) along with Mrs. Jennifer Moon and Mrs. Eileen Cloutier (teacher representatives) for volunteering their time throughout the year.  The Council completed the final draft of the 2013-2016 School Improvement Plan that will be presented to the School Committee in the fall for final approval, remained updated on current school happenings, acted as the liaison between the school, parents, and community, and provided ongoing feedback regarding a multitude of issues.  Thanks again to everyone for their hard work.

Mrs. Kane's Grade 5 class worked collaboratively to design a wooden toy box that was able to hold 30 cubic meters of toys.  It was great to hear the groups strategize while developing a design.

Ms. Kost and Ms. Paparo continued their Steps to Respect lessons.  Our Guidance Department has been visiting each classroom in the Roderick School and sharing information they have gained through MARC (Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center).  There has been very positive feedback from both students and staff.

Special thanks to Kelly Snead, Alisa West, and members of our PTO for continuing to make the Roderick School look so good.  The entire school population is grateful for your continued efforts.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to the entire food service staff, our physical education teachers, and school nurses!  On Friday, May 3rd, representatives from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education along with Congressman Joseph Kennedy presented Mrs. Judy White-Orlando and the Delaney and Roderick Schools' Food Service Staff with the Healthier US School Challenge Bronze Award for their work in keeping Delaney and Roderick School students healthy.

Students in Mrs. Cloutier's science class created electromagnets to find out how many paper clips they could attract with their hand-made electromagnet. Each group had 3 trials to create a strong magnet using a nail, wire, and a battery.  Through experimentation the students found that a tightly coiled wire wrapped along the whole nail created the strongest electromagnet.

Our annual Spring Book Fair took place last week.  A big thank you to Diana Zeller and members of the PTO for providing a great book fair for the students and staff.  Thank you to all of the families who supported our school by purchasing books and/or volunteering.

DI Spaghetti Supper Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the DI Spaghetti Supper fundraiser on May 2nd. A special thank you to Chief Anderson for being a guest server.  Funds raised will be used to support our DI team in the Nationals in Tennessee at the end of the month.  We greatly appreciate your support and donations and wish the team of Thomas Cyr, Faye Veilleux, and Melanie Veilleux the best of luck!

Norfolk police officer Steve Plympton visited our school on Wednesday to share information about the 2013 summer DARE camp.  If you would like more information regarding the Summer DARE program click here

WEST would like to thank all of the parents, teachers, donors and supporters who helped to make Comedy Night 2013 a success.  WEST raised over $20,000 at Comedy Night this year allowing us to fund even more exciting educational grants for our students.  Thank you so much for your support!

As the warm weather approaches, please remember to send a water bottle in to school with your child.  Water is a vital ingredient to keeping body temperature in check, as well as preventing headaches and other heat-related illnesses.

As a reminder - please visit our website to view all of the upcoming events in May and June.

Thank you for reading and have a great week!

Respectfully,
Stephen S. Grenham, Principal
